A Job as an Accounting Technician - what skills and training do you need?

Accounting technicians work for both private and public sector organisations, where they undertake a wide range of accountancy, financial and taxation tasks. One in twelve chartered accountants began their accountancy studies by working towards an AAT qualification.

Accountancy technician tasks range from organising Payroll and Book-keeping to preparing a variety of reports in positions such as credit control officer or account clerk; all with a view to ensuring financial information is collated, checked and analysed efficiently and to standard. Many accountancy technicians also offer independent accountancy services alongside their support work. 

Accountancy technicians have strong numerical, organisational and interpersonal sills and can have flexible work hours, particularly if working on a self-employed basis.

Role Profile can include:
  • Using software packages to record and retrieve information, particularly Excel spreadsheets.
  • Preparing accounts, budgets, reports and financial statements for clients.
  • Auditing internal and external accounts and making end of year calculations.
  • Undertaking administrative tasks such as administering payroll and arranging payments for invoices.
  • Ensuring the organisation's compliance with current taxation legislation.
  • Monitoring company/department financial transactions and controlling budgets.
  • Basic book-keeping.
At Pitman Training in Cork you have the opportunity to enrol on the Pitman Training Advanced Diploma in Accounting with AAT Foundation and get the Accounting skills and training needed to jump start your Career. Whether you are a beginner or refreshing your skills, this is a comprehensive training programme designed to give you book-keeping and accounting knowledge. You will study a range of core subjects such as Final Accounts Preparation, Elements of Costing, Book-keeping Module 1, Book-keeping Module 2, Book-keeping Module 3 and Sage 50 Accounts where you gain essential, practical accounts process understanding and ability. You work through each module step by step at your own pace to gain the knowledge required to work confidently in a number of roles such as; Accounts Assistant, Book-keeper, Finance Assistant or Finance Administrator to name but a few.  

As with all our training, this is a flexible diploma which can be studied via a combination of methods; in our Cork training centre or distance learning or combination of both. You can train part-time, full-time, evenings and weekends. The guideline learning time is 520 hours flexi study or 21 weeks full-time. (Full-time based on approximately 20-30 hours a week).
